Frequently asked questions

What is "assessed value" and where do I find mine?

Assessed value is the county’s official appraisal of your property for tax purposes — not your purchase price or a Zillow estimate. You can look it up free on your county’s property-records site (for Durham County, the Tax Administration’s real-property search). It changes at revaluation, most recently 2025 in Durham.

Why is my actual bill slightly different?

Real bills can include flat fees (solid waste, stormwater), special assessments, and exemptions or deferments (elderly, veteran, present-use farm value) that a rate calculator cannot know about. This estimate covers the rate-based portion, which is nearly all of a typical bill.

Do I pay both a city rate and a fire-district rate?

Usually not — inside city limits the city provides fire service, so you pay county + city. Outside city limits you pay county + fire district. A small number of parcels genuinely carry both (recently annexed areas); the map shows those zones explicitly.
